I have known Paul since 1976 when I was Managing Director at Capital Life Assurance and Paul was a popular member of our management team. Popular because he was very effective at planning, organising and controlling his department and leading his team. He was also popular as a facilitator. When dealing with a contentious issue we would appoint Paul to chair the meeting because we knew he would keep us on track and not waste time. He would stick to the issues and prevent the strong personalities from taking over – but without bruising egos. Paul was contracted by ParaFed NZ, the predecessor of Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ), to establish and manage its postal appeal back in 1993. This was PNZ’s major fundraising revenue source for many years and continued to be a significant contributor right through my time as CEO of PNZ (2002 – 2007). This success was down to Paul’s direct marketing skills and initiative and his ability to keep the programme fresh and relevant to our donor base.
